Let’s start with the basics, where are you from?

I’m from Saskatchewan, born in Regina. I split my time between my Mom’s salon and my Dad’s farm. Best of both worlds!

What pushed you to become a barber?

My first experience at a real barbershop (Ragged Ass Barbers) in Regina really changed the game for me. It made me want to do hair for sure, but then I became super intrigued by the idea of being a barber specifically. My dad always talked about straight razor shaves, so I wanted to learn how to master that skill.

Where did you learn how to cut hair?

Saskatoon! I graduated from MC College in 2017, and went on to do some apprenticeships as a stylist. But I quickly stepped into a role at a barbershop, and that’s where I’ve been practicing the most.

What’s your favourite haircut right now?

High and tight.

You’ve got a unique sense of style, how would you describe your look?

Giant man baby cartoon character! I love colour, and like to switch it up. I’m usually in a hat too.

Speaking of hats, where did the Strawhat Barber come from?

It’s from my favourite anime, One Piece. The character gets a hat that sets him on a course for the rest of his life, so his whole personality evolves from this journey he’s pursuing.

Besides anime, what else do you like to read/watch? Any recommendations?

I really love the Steven Erikson series Malazan Empire. It’s like Game of Thrones on steroids. Plus the author is Canadian, so that’s super cool too!

You’re new to Vancouver Island, what do you like the most so far?

I think the weather is awesome, coming from Saskatchewan I really appreciate the milder winters. I also love that you always feel like you’re visiting a small town. People here are so friendly and welcoming. The water is great too, love hangin’ at the beach.

What’s something that you would like prospective clients to know about you?

I’m always open to try new things and explore new styles. I like working with people, and I respect comfort zones. But I will always encourage my clients to push past their current style and try something new.

Any hair products you can’t live without?

I have a few!

I believe conditioner is super underrated for men, and it can make a big difference. Personally, I love the smell and texture of the Byrd lightweight conditioner.

At Heavy D’s, I love working with the Seppo’s Automotive Matte Bond-o. It’s the perfect combo of hold, texture and smell. It’s the best dry paste I’ve ever used so far.

I’m also a huge fan of the Grant’s shave cream. I’ve used a ton of different ones, and I like this brand because you don’t need any pre-shave products. It’s hydrating, and comfortable on the face. Highly recommend!
